It is a well-known story that Copenhagen wants to be the world’s best cycling city. And Copenhagen can in many ways live up to that reputation due to a good cycling infrastructure and rich tradition of cycling. But Copenhagen is not alone in its desire to be a leading cycling city, and cities in other countries are trying to challenge Copenhagen’s rank. There is therefore a constant need for new measures and initiatives to maintain Copenhagen’s status as a leading cycling city.

There is quite an impressive number of organisations, associations, committees and companies working to promote cycling in the city. The need is greater now than ever.

As you know, Denmark has committed itself to the UN’s 17 global goals and a 70% reduction in CO2 emissions by the year 2030. As the transport sector accounts for a large and ever-increasing CO2 emission from private cars, there is therefore great potential in incorporating cycling into the overall transport strategy.

There is a desire among many of the city’s citizens that the green transition must be started and that action must be taken on the climate and biodiversity crisis now. Many point to solutions where bicycles are included in, for example, the transport industry.

A huge strength of cycling is that it has a positive health value on both an individual and societal level. It is also an important social activity for many and a source of much joy in life.

In the summer of 2022, the Tour de France will pass by Copenhagen, and therefore – in the context of cycling – extra attention will be paid to the city nationally and internationally. Then there must be something to offer. Among other things, a cycling festival.

Therefore, there is every reason to:

– To focus on the role of cycling in the green transition towards a more sustainable city.

– To put a significant focus on cycling in Copenhagen in order to reap the resulting positive effects for the city and its citizens in relation to the green transition, sustainability, climate, environment and health.

-Celebrate the Copenhagen cycling culture, the Danish distinctiveness, all the fun, cute and funny cyclists, their diverse bikes and all the great experiences cycling offers!

The Copenhagen Bike Festival will form the framework for all of this. The city and its cyclists deserve a blast from a festival in 2021 and beyond.
